When soil gets compacted, how do you know if it's done?

Soil compaction meterThe percentage of water in the soil is used to get the dry density, which is then divided by the weight of the soil when wet. When doing a field density test, the percentage of compaction is determined by dividing the soil's dry density by the maximum dry density determined by the proctor test.
